I'grand looking to purchase a new car off craigslist from a individual party. I live in fairfield canton CT, simply i as well am expanding my search to Manhattan/brooklyn, etc.

If i purchase a machine in NY and register there, can i just immediatly transfer my plates/registration to CT without having to pay any taxes in NY?

Conversely, if the seller is willing to come up to CT from NY, tin I just register the motorcar from NY -> CT directly without having to go through the hassel of registering with NY first?

Information technology'south a pain. You lot demand to annals the machine in CT and go a temp plate to bulldoze it back. Or have the seller drive it to your house. And so y'all have to practise the "real" plate registration which volition include passing emissions.

We bought one of our cars in NY and one in NJ both from private parties. Both of us went and one drive backside the other, so nosotros didn't have to do the temp 50
Plate thing. And so we merely registered the car like you would whatever other new motorcar in CT, no big deal.

Put insurance on the automobile and drive it back if they tin can't bring it upward to CT. It'due south something like a $75 dollar ticket if you get caught. Don't put plates on the car from another vehicle, that's misuse of plates and a much steeper fine. You will demand a VIN verification done before yous can register it. Any emissions location should be able to do information technology. You will pay sales tax when you annals it in CT. No need to practise annihilation with NY DMV.

Make sure you practise some sort of history study on the vehicle, the reports are far from perfect but they are better than buying blind. There are a lot of cheap cars in NY because of salvage titles beingness reissued every bit clean clean as well every bit a lot of Hurricane Sandy vehicles still out in that location being resold later they have been totaled then cleaned up to be resold. In that location were so many cars damaged that insurance companies couldn't keep up and many cars slipped through the paperwork procedure of being marked totaled with DMV and still take make clean titles.

Go to google type in CT DMV bill of sale. The tiptop hit should bring you to a PDF bill of auction that you fill out. Requite the seller a copy and you keep a copy. The. On the back of the vehicles title will be a section that you fill out with your information. Bring those two forms and a re-create of the VIN verification to the CT DMV, pay the registration fees and sales tax and your all ready.
